Had the same problem. Here is what i did to fix it. Got a piece of leather (soft leather), wrapped it around the shift lever and whatever was left off the rubber. Measured the circumference and then cut off the remaining. Hand stitched the two ends and slid it over the shift lever. I know its little bit time taking but, saved my boots!! and works great :)
